The Gotei 13 is a large organization of Shinigami whose primary goal is to protect the balance of the Soul Cycle. When first founded, they were regarded as a band of merciless killers. The organization now serves as a military force with a multitude of responsibilities that have been refined over the many years of its existence.

The First Division consists of Central Command and the Rapid Response Teams. Central Command acts as a hub for all communication between Divisions, creating a reliable network where the Gotei can accurately and quickly convey messages between Divisions. The Rapid Response teams are an "on-call" group of shinigami ready to immediately respond to sudden requests for aid and other unpredictable emergencies.

The Second Division specializes in methods of infiltration, stealth, and reconnaissance. Their focus is more often speed and agility, using this attributes to get the job done. This Division is under the umbrella of Central 46, occasionally used for jobs that require the skills of a rogue.

Often called the "Face" of the Gotei, the Third Division focuses on keeping a positive reputation for the Gotei 13, but doing so through the strict and lawful enforcement of Soul Society Law. In short, they are the "police" of the Gotei 13, but only police those within the walls of the Seireitei. Their job leads to constant patrols of the Seireitei, keeping the city's citizens safe, and dealing with any in-Gotei problems.

Members of the Fourth Division specialize in medical practices and Kaidō. They normally work in the hospital, clinics throughout the Seireitei, and within squads who request them.

The Fifth Division consists of Kidō specialists. Kidō specialists have a strong sense of control over their Reiryoku and can perform spells easier than others. Kidō specialists are responsible for the implementation of seals and other “magical” works throughout the Seireitei.

The Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Divisions all work closely together to monitor the World of the Living. The Sixth Division is in charge of the Americas. The Sixth Division is required to manage the infestation of hollow, while also caring for recently departed. They monitor the balance of the Soul Cycle, making sure to keep the Cycle flowing smoothly.

The Ninth Division watches over the Rukongai, acting as a police and security force for the souls that live within and recruitment for the Gotei 13. They also take on jobs in the Rukongai if payment is given.

The Tenth Division is filled with powerful and harshly trained shinigami because they are the guards of the Crimson Edge. They travel in and out of the Soul Society, dealing with hollow and Arrancar more than any other Division. Most Tenth Division members are stationed out on posts along the Crimson Edge to prevent people from crossing into and out of the Edge.

The Eleventh Division acts as a police and security force for the Shōjintoku, taking on the duties of protection for citizens located too far from the Seireitei. Due to the distance from the Seireitei, most members of the Eleventh Division are often posted in outposts in the Shōjintoku for extended periods of time.

The Twelfth Division is the Research and Development squad of the Gotei 13. They are responsible for the invention and advancement of technology within the Gotei. Some examples of this are the gigai, soul phone, and mod souls.
- Thirteenth Division:

The Thirteen Division is the reserves of Gotei. These are shinigami who are not immediately on the frontline, but choose to apply themselves in another way: Shinō Academy. They are responsible for the education and training of newly recruited shinigami. Normally, all shinigami are required to attend Shinō Academy until their knowledge and skill of required subjects is satisfactory. This takes between 1 and 6 years depending on the level of the shinigami.
Due to squad specializations, there are small bonuses given to characters based on one Division they are in. You do not gain these bonuses through Division hopping. You do not lose them when you leave a Division either.
