Gotei Thirteen
Ninth Division, Captain
Height5'11”
Weight160 lbs
Appearance PicturePersonalityStoic but good natured the man now known as the Captain of the Ninth Division is not exactly a dour man, but tends to remain serious. He is known to be one of the quieter Captains unless something directly pertains to himself, his Division, or his duty. When dealing with anyone or thing he would consider a threat his attitude remains completely serious, but he gives respect to any who fight with their all regardless of age. He has a noted soft-spot for the young, and some say it was an event involving a child that drove him to finally join the Gotei in the first place. It is also known that Mifune will not allow himself to be defeated by the same opponent twice. In combat Mifune is an incredibly observant and tactical fighter, taking note of small changes in movements or demeanor of his opponents and either commenting aloud or in his head. In addition to the breadth of experience he has acquired he possesses razor-sharp instincts and an iron will.
SynopsisWhile the Three Fists are known for being the oldest active Shinigami in the Gotei, Mifune in fact ranks just below them. He has been walking the worlds for over twelve hundred years, and much of that time has been spent with the Gotei. He spent roughly two-hundred years traveling the Rukongai and beyond, making a name for himself that has stuck with him to this day. The name Mifune is in fact not his original name; he doesn't know what his name was, so he took on one instead. He joined the Gotei 960 years ago, and rose through the ranks until taking the Captain's position of the Ninth Division 715 years ago.
Mifune seeks to curb the bloodshed in the Rukongai and beyond, and so has taken a personal interest in the conflicts between the Gotei and the Mikazuki. However, he has run into the real issue with this; there are only so many resources to go around. This hasn't stopped him from trying to smooth the tensions between them, but nothing is ever simple. Mifune is one of the pillars of the Gotei, though in a much quieter way than the Three Fists or the Captain Commander. He brings a calm and focus to the Gotei, a quiet strength to hold up the rest when the going gets tough.
╫ Natural Abilities ╫
Strong SoulEven before Mifune began down the path of being a Shinigami in a real sense, he possessed a strong source of reriyoku. Some interpreted this as the force of his will, others his fighting spirit. Mifune gains a +3 bonus to all his natural stats.
Enhanced SensesMifune possesses one of the most acute sets of senses. This pertains to all five natural senses as well as his ability to pinpoint Reiatsu signatures.
Immense SpeedWhile Mifune is not known for his overwhelming skill in movement abilities, his natural speed both in terms of move speed and strike speed is impressive.
╫ Racial Combat Abilities ╫
HakudaMifune does not approach the legendary levels of Hakuda skill that many others in the Gotei possess, but he is quite proficient in its use and with melding it with his Zanjutsu.
HohoMifune is quite practiced in the basics of Hoho, but relies more on his own speed in terms of combat. That said, he has put in enough practice to become practiced in both precision close-range Shunpo and longer distance travel.
KaidoMifune has no skill in Kaido.
KidouWhile his practical knowledge of Kidou is somewhat limited, Mifune has a rock-solid grasp of Kidou theory. He has put a great deal of time and effort into research on Kidou while developing Chōetsu ken.
ZanjutsuMifune's single greatest strength in terms of combat ability. Mifune has been carrying and using the sword for longer than most of the current Captains have been alive, not counting the Legendary Trio. Before he joined the Gotei he made a name for himself in the Rukongai, using his skill in the blade to earn a living. He earned his nicknames through combat and blood, and there are few foolish enough to try and deny that he is one of the most skilled swordsman to have walked the worlds.
╫ Zanjutsu Techniques ╫
Infinite One Sword StyleA style of combat swordsmanship Mifune developed over the course of his life, it is the base upon which his power is built upon. Mifune began to craft this style even before he joined the Gotei, and has continued to refine it ever sense, adapting the principles and techniques of Zanjutsu to further increase the styles potency. While his mastery in swordsmanship itself is staggering, it is when using this style that he lives up to his old title. While using this style and able to wield more than four swords at once, Mifune gains a +5 bonus to his Zanjutsu stat.
Chōetsu ken (Transcending Sword)Chōetsu ken is a technique Mifune has been developing and practicing for a great deal of time. What the ability seeks to do is simple; use Kidou to enhance the blade of one's Zanpaku-tou so as to deliver more devastating attacks. In practice however, the technique has proven tricky. It took Mifune nearly two-hundred years to even begin to make progress with the technique, though he knows it would take a fraction of that time to teach it to anyone else. This is because this time was full of trial and error, and required him to grow much stronger before he could reliably begin to generate any effect with the technique.
While one is using Chōetsu ken the strength of one's attacks are bolstered by a wash of kidou that surrounds the blade. They are able to project out blades of energy with their attack, effectively using their Zanjutsu skill at range. Mifune gains a +30 bonus to his strength stat as long as they are using their Zanpaku-tou to attack. Additionally, Chōetsu ken allows Mifune to more easily strike past an enemy's defenses. He treats an enemy's Durability as lower by up to an amount equal to his Kidou stat.
╫ Zanpaku-tou ╫
Zanpaku-tou Spirit NameKi o Kiru [木を切る] (Severing Tree)
Zanpaku-tou Spirit AppearanceSealed Zanpaku-tou AppearanceMifune's sealed Zanpaku-tou has a red wrapped hilt, and is otherwise uniform.
Shikai
Release Phrase“Encroach,”
Shikai AppearanceKi o Kiru is simplistic in its appearance and function. Upon the release of the zanpaku-tou and the use of its ability, Ki o Kiru covers a large area with up to one hundred swords identical to the one Mifune wields. This field can move as Mifune creates additional blades to follow a shifting battle.
Shikai AbilitiesSword CreationThe main ability of Ki o Kiru is the simple creation of additional swords for Mifune's use. As the name implies, Mifune can have up to one hundred blades created at a time. Upon the initial creation of the blade, he is able to launch them like a projectile, though after that they act as a normal zanpaku-tou. Though his own skill, however, many believe that his Zanpaku-tou gives him telekinesis over the blades. This is untrue, however.
Mifune at one time was concerned about how to weave in his Zanpaku-tou into his Infinite One Sword Style, worrying that whatever ability his blade had would disrupt it. Instead, his Zanpaku-tou became the ultimate weapon for the style. While using his Shikai or Bankai and using the Infinite One Sword Style, Mifune gains a +7 Bonus to his Zanjutsu stat.
Bankai
Bankai NameKen No Mori [剣の森] (Forest of Blades)
Bankai DescriptionUpon release, Ken no Mori takes and expands on the appearance of Ki o Kiru. Radiating out from where Mifune releases the Zanpaku-tou, spectral copies of his Zanpaku-tou will appear. These will cover every surface in the area as it expands. However, these blades are intangible and will not hinder anyone moving through them while they remain so. This effect radiates out to a radius of a mile and a half. At the edges of of the Bankai's area, strange yellow tape appears, cordoning off the area.
Bankai AbilitiesKen no Mori is a forest of intangible blades, covering a large area. This area is Mifune's bankai, and within its borders there are several effects active.
Namae no Nai [名前のない] (Nameless)Namae no Nai refers to one of the main aspects of Ken no Mori; upon release, Mifune can summon up to one hundred masked warriors. These Nameless are capable of picking up and using the Zanpaku-tous strewn throughout Ken no Mori, and serve as one of the key strengths. Through them, Mifune is able to project his own power over the significant area of his Bankai. They are capable of discerning friend from foe, using Mifune's own opinion on the subject on a case by case basis. Mifune is able to see and hear through each Nameless, and is able to switch places with any one of them within the confines of his Bankai up to twice per post. They are unable to leave the area of the Bankai. They're stats are listed below.
Spectral BladesWhile the spectral blades that make up the Bankai do not hinder movement of others this only remains true while the area is unoccupied. Once one of the Nameless or Mifune himself appears in the area the spectral blades become solid once more. Any spectral blades within a hundred foot radius of Mifune become solid, while any blades within fifty feet of the Nameless does the same.
Home Field AdvantageWhile within the area of his Bankai Mifune and his Namae no Nai are bolstered, gaining a +8 bonus to their natural stats.
RestrictionUnlike many large-area Bankais, Ken no Mori is not mobile once it is released. Mifune is capable of leaving the area, but in doing so he loses access to the benefits of his Bankai until he re-enters the area. Unless he brings any of the blades from Ken no Mori with him, he is unable to summon more while his Bankai is active and his is outside its area of effect. If those blades leave his possession and are more than fifty feet away, they will simply vanish.
Additionally, resealing Ken no Mori is not as simple as willing it so. Each of the Namae no Nai still active within Ken no Mori must return to Mifune before the Bankai can be sealed. As they move back towards him the effect of Ken no Mori dissipates until the last has returned to him.
